Wodka (Russian: водка, vodka; Polish: wódka; Finnish: votka) is a clear transparent spirit that you can hardly smell. Probable originated in the western part of Russia, or Poland. It is the second best selling spirit in the world. Wodka is distilled to a maximum of 95% ABV. The consuming percentage varies between 35% and 70% ABV (common strength is 40% ABV). Wodka usually is made of barley, potatoes, or rye and is mostly stored in containers filled up with charcoal to filtrate all the smell and impurities. ![]() ![]() ![]() European law used to say that wodka could be made of all kinds of basic ingredients as long as the label was telling where it was made of. This was the reason that certain American and Russian wodka’s were allowed on the European market. In June 2007 the European Parliament supported a request of Poland, Finland and Sweden, to regulate that wodka had to be made of grain or potatoes. Especially in Eastern Europe and Scandinavia wodka is the most popular spirit. Since the mid nineties a lot of flavoured wodka’s entered the market, with flavourings like; pepper, fruit, vanilla, cinnamon or honey.![]() ![]() In Russia the habit is to drink wodka with food. People drinking wodka straight without food are supposed to be addicts (pjanitsy). The same can be said about Poland, but in these countries they always find a reason at any time of the day to serve a meal so they can drink their Wodka.
